Tibet has been occupied by China since 1949. About one million people lost their lives during the years of
oppression that continue to this day. For their resistance, the people of Tibet, through the International
Campaign for Tibet (ICT), were awarded the Geuzenpenning 2005, a Dutch award for resistance and
important contributions to democracy. Actor Richard Gere, president of the ICT, and Lodi Gyari,
representative of the Dalai Lama, were present at the award’s presentation in Vlaardingen, Holland
The non-violent character of Tibet’s resistance, based on its Buddhist culture, is highlighted by a nun who
was 13 years old when she was imprisoned by the Chinese for the duration of eleven years, because she
had been shouting slogans for religious freedom in favour of the Dalai Lama.
Now that China has opened its borders to international trade and will be hosting the Olympics in 2008,
hopes are growing for a new impulse in the negotiations concerning Tibet. Lodi Gyari, leader of the
negotiations delegation of the Tibetan government in exile, expresses his hope that China will gradually
come to realize that autonomy for Tibet can be a win-win situation for both China and Tibet.
