Actor Richard Gere talks to Eunice Mangwane of Hamburg, South Africa in front of
the Keiskamma Altarpiece in a Toronto church August 12, 2006. Mangwane and
more than 100 women created the altarpiece in six months at the urging of a
doctor who felt that the unique form of communal therapy would help them with
their grief at losing loved ones to AIDS. The area around Hamburg is economically
destitute and hit hard by AIDS according to the UCLA AIDS Institute.

Actor Richard Gere speaks at the opening
ceremonies concert at the AIDS2006
conference in Toronto, Sunday Aug. 13, 2006.
-As a person promoting peace and help at the global level, what is your hope about
HIV/AIDS and what is your role, as a famous person with many connections, in
promoting youth involvement in fighting HIV/AIDS?

-I would hope that youth are wise enough to get themselves informed about HIV/AIDS so
that they don’t get hurt; a very specific thing, there shouldn’t be a reason for young
person to get infected with HIV, if they know how to protect themselves, they won’t get
it, it is up to all of us to know that, to tell our friends and leaders. I think it is about
education. Young people must have access to the correct information.
